usage review

In 2008, a mysterious person or group of people recognized as Satoshi Nakamoto combined existing technology like proof-of-work and digital signatures to pioneer Bitcoin (BTC), the first decentralized cryptocurrency and peer-to-peer electronic cash system.

Stemming from the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, which exposed the inefficiencies and malpractices of existing monetary institutions, Bitcoin’s innovative technology paved the way for a new financial concept of independence from governments and their central banks.

Nakamoto’s
invention catalyzed a gigantic digital ecosystem of entrepreneurship, commerce and financial breakthrough.

Rising inflation and low trust in traditional economic systems drove a monetary revolution that would change the face of finance forever.

The great technological innovation that set Bitcoin’s blockchain apart from other digital currencies was its solution to the double-spending problem, which previously couldn’t be guaranteed without relying on a trusted intermediary like a bank.

Cryptocurrencies have since proven to be a source of security in times of financial crisis for regions with unstable economic structures. This is because they suffer no significant impact from financial crises, as their value is balanced universally

What is cryptocurrency?

A cryptocurrency is a digital currency used to purchase goods and services. Its transactions are verified and its records are stored on a decentralized, digital ledger called a blockchain, secured by robust cryptography and supported by a peer-to-peer network.

Businesses can use this peer-to-peer network to verify and finalize transactions quickly without the need for a trusted central authority.
Blockchains

Blockchains have opened a path to rethinking how age-old issues can be addressed, and have found applications across several fields, from instant cross-border verification of money transfers to transaction traceability in supply chains, voting and, more recently, the Metaverse and nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

Cryptocurrencies are developing and expanding fast worldwide.
Number of crypto users

Their overall value reached a peak of $2.8 trillion at the end of 2021. If we compare it with the $2 trillion and 1.6 trillion euros in circulation today, we get an idea of where the industry is heading.

Among proficient traders, trading Bitcoin and cryptocurrency has become a profitable activity. While many crypto enthusiasts tend to ‘hodl’ their favorite coins and tokens, many have turned to day-trading for increased profit.

Between 2012 (the first year of Bitcoin’s historical records) and 2021, the price of BTC increased by over 105,000%, considering the lowest point in 2013 at $65.53 and the highest level in 2021 at $68,789. In 2021, Bitcoin reached an average annual growth rate of 60%, and the overall cryptocurrency market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 56.4% from 2019 to 2025.

There’s been an increase of nearly 60% per annum in Bitcoin transactions and the creation of new unique Bitcoin wallets over the last five years.

The transaction increase is likely from the purchase and sale of goods rather than pure online trading. Crypto owners also tend to hodl Bitcoin, while most other cryptocurrencies’ popularity could be a short-lived trend.

Crypto companies

Despite Tesla backing away from its initial support of Bitcoin payments at the beginning of 2021, other major brands worldwide are accepting crypto payments. Save The Children, Subway, Norwegian, Burger King, Expedia, AT&T, Coca-Cola, PayPal, Booking.com and Starbucks are only a few of the world’s biggest companies that accept crypto payments.

In the United States, over 85% of merchants reportedly consider that allowing crypto payments is a high priority due to the increasing popularity of cryptocurrencies. An average ROI of 327% and an increase of up to 40% in new customers for merchants who began accepting crypto payments in 2020 may also be a drive for other companies looking to introduce crypto payments.

Also, crypto customers’ spending appears to be higher, with an average of $250 more per transaction than fiat customers’ spending.

Crypto’s impact on the luxury industry

Off-White, Charles & Keith, Equinox and Gucci are only a few luxury brands that have entered the cryptocurrency industry by enabling crypto payments or are participating in the blockchain-based Metaverse with their branding.

The digital demand for fashion and luxury brands is expected to grow from current low levels and result in extra sales for the industry that could reach $50 billion by 2030.
According to Morgan Stanley, “Nonfungible tokens and social gaming could expand luxury groups’ total addressable market by more than 10% in eight years and boost industry earnings before interest and tax by around 25%.”
Remittances
Digital cross-border remittances are projected to grow from $295 billion in 2021 to $428 billion in 2025. A 2021 research by Pymnts and Stellar Development Foundation found that almost a quarter of those surveyed, roughly 8 million individuals, used at least one form of cryptocurrency to send payments internationally.
The use of cryptocurrency for money transfers has grown rapidly, as crypto remittances are 388 times faster and 127 times cheaper than traditional remittance methods.

Gaming

The gaming market is expected to reach a value of $340 billion by 2027, providing enormous potential for the adoption of cryptocurrencies as decentralized payments.

According to Pymnts, 25.1% of crypto owners have used cryptocurrency to make purchases for online gaming or gambling in 2021, while 48.6% of crypto owners will consider spending cryptocurrency on online gaming or gambling in the future.

Funds and amount of investments

Cryptocurrencies have played an essential role in the emergence of new digital entrepreneurial ecosystems and fundraising methods, such as the initial coin offering (ICO). The first ICO was carried out in July 2013 by Mastercoin, a cryptocurrency built on the Bitcoin blockchain. However, ICOs only boomed later, between 2017 and 2018, when incredible amounts of money started pouring into the market.

Unfortunately, the ICO fundraising approach collapsed within a couple of years of its initial boom due to speculation, market greed and a lack of regulation that deprived investors of necessary trust in assets. Therefore, a new way of obtaining investment funding was required for the industry to regain its reputation.

Security token offerings (STOs) and initial exchange offerings (IEOs) tried to mend the damage left by ICOs; however, they never really took off as investment funding procedures. Crypto companies eventually went back to traditional funding from venture capital firms, and in 2021, investors poured more than $30 billion into the crypto industry, more than all the previous years combined. Roughly $7.2 billion of that $30 billion came from U.S.-based investors.

Crypto becoming mainstream in 2021 meant that many companies could attract investors looking for the next big thing. 2021 was the year of the massive proliferation of crypto exchanges, startups dealing with digital collectibles and crypto-enabled gaming with the Metaverse on the front line, all areas that ensured that high-profile multibillion-dollar investments were allocated to the industry.

Central Bank Digital
Currency (CBDC) status

Central banks worldwide are looking at issuing digital currencies to their citizens, so-called central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). The popularity of digital currencies like BTC and Ether (ETH) has driven the adoption of the easy and flexible transactional method offered by cryptocurrencies.

Such a framework has encouraged central banks to support digital currencies.

Developed countries have begun patenting their CBDCs, which are considered a natural evolution of cash as a method of exchange.

The central banks of Thailand, Uruguay, Eastern Caribbean and China have also started the process of issuing their CBDCs.

In 2022, the European Central Bank published details of implementing a digital euro that is viewed as the natural evolution of money and the financial system. In particular, the ECB is working on providing a digital currency that becomes a widely accepted and user-friendly payment method while securing the financial stability of a system that must embrace the digital revolution.

Most International Monetary Fund member countries are actively considering the adoption of CBDCs, with a few having already issued or piloted them.

An IMF study was published to help set some guidelines for identifying and sharing insights and lessons from existing projects to benefit the countries that want to follow their experience.

The paper studies six advanced CBDC projects, namely:

  • A country where the CBDC has already been issued (Central Bank of The Bahamas)
  • A pilot CBDC is undergoing tests involving actual households and firms (People’s Bank of China, Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, Banco Central de Uruguay)
  • A CBDC project has been brought onto the country’s political agenda and is being analyzed by government or parliamentary bodies outside of the central bank (Sweden Central Bank, Sveriges Riksbank)
  • The central bank has carried out a CBDC project and decided against issuing a CBDC for the time being (Bank of Canada)
In August 2022, the number of cryptocurrency ATMs worldwide reached 39,000.
Crypto ATMs

Cryptocurrency ATMs are electronic kiosks similar to fiat cash machines that allow users to buy and sell digital assets in exchange for cash or with a debit card. In contrast to traditional cash machines that connect users to their bank accounts, crypto ATMs connect users with their digital wallets to process sale and purchase transactions.

The highest number of crypto ATMs is in the U.S., followed by Canada, the United Kingdom and Austria. A detailed split by country is available.

Cryptocurrency users who opt for a high level of privacy prefer to buy or sell Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies through ATMs due to most machines’ lack of identity verification. As of August 2021, Genesis Coin was the leading Bitcoin ATM manufacturer worldwide, with a 41.5% market share.

While Bitcoin and cryptocurrency continue to gather recognition and adoption worldwide, their legality highly depends on each country’s jurisdiction. Mostly, the usage of crypto is allowed worldwide. However, some nations have taken a different approach, perhaps due to the threat that an anonymous and uncontrollable currency poses.

Many developed countries, such as the U.S., Canada and the U.K., allow cryptocurrency usage, while other countries, including China and Egypt, have deemed it illegal.

The regulation framework is fragmented, as cryptocurrencies are subject to different classifications and tax treatment depending on the country under consideration.
